February is Children’s Dental Health Month, so what a perfect time to review the best ways to care for your child’s teeth!  Use these tips to help keep their smile bright and healthy.

When should my child have their first dental visit, and how often should be they be seen?

Schedule a checkup by their first birthday to get them used to the dentist and to discuss oral hygiene, diet, bottle use, and fluoride. Schedule a dental checkup every six months to fully support their oral health.

When and how should they brush and floss their teeth?

Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears using a finger brush for young children. Brush twice a day, especially before bedtime. Help with brushing until they can tie their shoes (around ages 7-8). Begin flossing when teeth are close enough that toothbrush bristles can’t reach between them.

How much toothpaste do they need?

•  Under age 2: a smear of fluoridated toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice).

•  Age 2 and older: a pea-sized amount.

Do they need to use fluoride?

Yes. Fluoride is essential for strong, healthy teeth. Use fluoridated toothpaste and talk to your provider about oral fluoride drops or tablets for extra protection.
