Caring for Children’s Teeth To Prevent Tooth Decay

Care Don’t Share

Don’t share utensils with your child or “clean” a pacifier by putting it in your mouth. You can transfer cavity-causing germs to your child.

Use the Right Amount of Toothpaste

The ADA recommends that parents and caregivers use fluoride toothpaste for children as soon as the teeth erupt or become visible around six months of age. Children between the ages of 6 months to 3 years should use a grain of rice-sized amount of toothpaste. A pea-sized amount of toothpaste is recommended for children between the ages of 3 and 6.

Seal out Decay

Ask your dentist about applying dental sealants to chewing surfaces of teeth.

Start Cleaning Teeth Early

As soon as the first tooth appears, begin cleaning by wiping the tooth with a clean, damp cloth. Once more teeth appear, start using a small, soft toothbrush. Start flossing as soon as two teeth touch.

Supervise Brushing

Brush your child's teeth for two minutes twice a day until your child has the skills to brush alone.

Dental Visits

Have the first dental visit when your child gets the first tooth or turns one year old, whichever comes first.

Urgent Care

Unexpected illnesses and injuries happen with kids, often outside of office hours.  That’s why our Spokane Urgent Care clinics are designed to meet immediate needs for minor illnesses or injuries.  We have two locations in the Spokane area that are open 7 days a week.
